People Educated About Bees
1. Ethical Beekeeping Practices
Our bees are at the heart of everything we do. Every decision we make prioritizes their health and well-being:
- Surplus-Only Harvesting: We only harvest honey that exceeds what the colony needs. During scarce seasons, we reduce or skip harvest entirely.
- No Chemical Treatments: We use natural, organic methods for varroa mite management and disease prevention. No synthetic chemicals ever touch our hives.
- Natural Colony Management: We allow bees to swarm naturally and build comb on their own foundation rather than forcing artificial patterns.
- Year-Round Monitoring: Every hive is inspected regularly by trained beekeepers to ensure health, adequate food stores, and proper ventilation.
- Diverse Forage: We partner with rooftop garden managers to ensure a diverse range of flowering plants are available throughout the growing season.
2. Carbon-Neutral Operations
We achieved carbon-neutral certification in 2024 and are working toward carbon-negative status by 2027:
- Local Sourcing: All honey is produced within city limits, minimizing transportation emissions.
- Electric Fleet: Our delivery vehicles are 100% electric, charged with renewable energy.
- Carbon Offsets: Remaining emissions are offset through verified urban reforestation and wetland restoration projects.
- Renewable Energy: Our studio and processing facility run on 100% renewable electricity.
- Annual Audits: We publish an annual carbon footprint report verified by independent auditors.
3. Zero-Waste Packaging
Every component of our packaging has been designed with end-of-life in mind:
- Glass Jars: Infinitely recyclable and reusable. We offer a jar return program with discounts on your next order.
- Labels: Printed on compostable paper with plant-based inks.
- Shipping Materials: Corrugated cardboard (recycled and recyclable), paper tape, and molded pulp inserts. Zero plastic, zero Styrofoam.
- Gift Packaging: Made from FSC-certified paper and designed to be repurposed as storage or décor.
4. Biodiversity & Urban Ecology
Urban beekeeping has a ripple effect on the entire urban ecosystem:
- Pollination Boost: Our bees pollinate an estimated 500+ million flowers annually, supporting urban food gardens, parks, and street trees.
- Habitat Creation: We install pollinator-friendly plant boxes alongside every apiary to support not just honeybees, but native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
- Responsible Density: We follow academic guidelines for apiary spacing to avoid competition with native pollinator species.
- Research Partnerships: We collaborate with universities to study urban pollinator health and share data openly.
5. Community & Education
- Free School Programs: We visit 50+ schools annually with live observation hives and hands-on activities.
- Beekeeping Workshops: Monthly public workshops teach urban residents how to keep their own bees responsibly.
- Hive Sponsorship: Royal Harvest subscribers sponsor the installation and maintenance of a rooftop hive in underserved communities.
- Open Data: We publish quarterly reports on hive health, honey yields, and pollinator activity to advance urban ecology research.
6. Continuous Improvement
Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We set new goals each year and hold ourselves accountable:
- Carbon-negative operations by 2027.
- 100% jar return rate by 2028.
- 50 rooftop apiaries by 2027.
- 10,000 people educated annually by 2027.
- Published impact report every Q1.
